Hi, Friends and Sleevenistas! I hope you’re having a great week so far!  You guys have heard me talk about the clothing rental subscription service, Gwynnie Bee, in previous posts (Here and Here).  The great thing about using Gwynnie Bee is that you have access to an unlimited wardrobe in sizes 0-32.  You can wear something today, then return it tomorrow!

This month, Gwynnie Bee is partnering with Year Up, an organization that helps students 18-24 from low-income homes prepare and land internships at some of their dream companies (think: Google, Spotify, Buzzfeed).  It’s so awesome what they’re doing!  In honor of this initiative, they reached out to me for a campaign giving style tips and advice about what to wear to work when you’re working at your dream job!

As many of you may know, I’m a lawyer by day.  In some ways, my current job is a dream job.  I love the folks that I work with, and it’s generally not a high-stress work environment.  My office is business casual, so I don’t often wear suits (unless I have a meeting or presentation).  I would describe my work style as casual and comfortable, and I love wearing color and prints to work.  This dress from Gwynnie Bee is just the type of thing I would wear to work because I love the polka dot print, and it’s super comfortable.  Fun fact: my boss has this exact same dress!  Lol.

If I had to give any career style tips or advice, it would be:

  1. Be comfortable! – Whatever you’re wearing, you’ll have on for at least 10 hours, so make sure it feels good.  The polka dot dress I’m wearing above is soft, stretchy, and comfortable.  The pants I wear most days to work also have some stretch, so they are super comfortable too.  I usually pair those pants with loose tops, cardigans (more on that later), and flats.  Comfort is key!
  2. Keep backups at work! –  In my office, I have backup jewelry (earrings, in particular, in case I forget to put some on in the morning), several blazers, in case I have to run to a meeting, a thick cardigan for my cold office, and flats for laps around the office or walking to lunch on days I’ve chosen to wear heels or less than comfortable shoes.  I keep these items in my office at all times! Backup heels are always a good idea too, in case you want to go out after work or need to dress up for an impromptu meeting.
  3. Accessorize! – Great accessories can add polish to any work outfit.  I think the most effective accessory for the workplace is a good necklace.  Note how the necklace in the look above pulls the look together.  You can also add color to a neutral outfit with a great necklace.
  4. Cardigans are key! – I realize I’m not wearing a cardigan in this post, but I easily could and likely would on a normal workday.  I’ll talk more about cardigans in my upcoming work basics post, but many of us work in offices that are COLD.  I think having cardigans in multiple styles and colors offer practicality and great versatility to your work wardrobe.  Imagine this look above with a fun green cardigan or mustard yellow perhaps or even red.  It changes the whole look.
  5. Have fun with colors and prints! –  Wear prints and bright colors to work! The easiest way to do this is by wearing a fun top or cardigan.  But try to incorporate cute, printed or brightly colored skirts, dresses, and pants!  You can also mix and match your prints (Here, Here).  Just because you are in a serious office or do serious work, doesn’t mean you can’t have some serious fun with your work wardrobe.

Tell me about your work style in the comments!  Have a great week, and thanks so much for reading!
